PRODUCTION AT THE FACTORY - Factory 49, 49 Shepherd St, Marrickville - 4 December to 14 December, 2019.

'Production at the Factory' was a group exhibtion of artists who had exhibited and/or had residencies in the Factory 49 Paris space.  It involved 12 Australian and International artists - Caroline McGregor, Bart Koldewee, Elizabeth Bodey, Pam Aitken, Kevin Yu, Sandra Curry, Jan Handel, Pam Leung, Audrey Newton, Marta Ferracin and myself.

My work was a gouache on paper, 'Gombrich (So Deeply Ingrained Is Our Tendency To Regard Order As The Mark Of An Ordering MInd That We Instinctively React With Wonder Whenever We Percieve Regularity In The Natural World. Sometimes, In Walking Through A Wood, Our Eyes May Be Arrested By Mushrooms Arranged In A Perfect Circle. Folklore Calls Them Fairy Rings, Because It Seems Impossible To Imagine That Such Regularity Has Come About By Accident.'),  41cm x 82cm.

SALON REALITES NOUVELLES 2019 - Parc de Floral, Paris, France - 19 to 21 October, 2019

For the 2019 Salon Realities Nouvelles I exhibited the 'Cube Tower' that had been a part of my exhibition at Factory 49 Paris, 'Comprendre Pas'. That exhibiton finished on the 5th of October with the Salon opening on October 19th.  A big thank you to Pam Aitken for storing and delivering my work to the Parc Floral de Paris, and also to fellow Salon Participant, Canadian artist Carol Cooper for the photographs from the vernissage.

I had the opportunity to present work in the Factory 49 project space in Paris.  The project is running for three years showing solo exhibitions of mostly Australian artists.  Each exhibition runs for a month with either the artist doing a residency in the space for the duration; or for three months of each year, Pam Aitken installs and sits the space during the exhibitions.  I went over for two weeks, installing the work and meeting up with many artists during the time I was there, with the exhibition continuing for a further two weeks.

The exhibition consisted of 7 gouache on paper works and 4 oil on canvas works from the 'Nothing to Say Here' series, and a box work 'Cube Tower'.  The 'Cube Tower' was constructed from as many flat-pack boxes as would fit in my suitcase.

I called the exhibition 'Comprendre Pas'  which translates as 'Understand Not'.  I wanted to refer to the misunderstanding/non-understanding of the 'Nothing To Say Here' works which are created from words and appear to follow a code, but do not follow any consistent system.  There is then a second level of misunderstanding when these works are shown in Paris as it depends on the viewers understanding of the English language, and my lack of knowledge of French.  And as a local pointed out, the phrase should correctly read 'Pas Comprendre' - I was aware of this but simply said that I comprendre pas?

'The Committee Show' included the work of a number of the artists who had served on the Factory 49 committee from its inception in 2006.  The artists shown were Pam Aitken, Harry Aizemberg, Tania Alexander, Amarie Bergman, Mandy Burgess,Tara Lyubicic, Ro Murray, Chris Packer, Molly Wagner and myself.

NOTHING TO SAY HERE - Five Walls, Level 1/119 Hopkins St, Footscray, 3011, Melbourne - May 22 to June 8, 2019

My solo exhibition at Five Walls gallery in Footscray, Melbourne with works from my "Nothing To Say Here" series in which arrangements of circles and squares are determined by random artists' quotes.

"For me, painting is arranging colour and shape on a surface. There is no subject. This series of paintings started with a quote from John Cage, “I have nothing to say and I am saying it”. They are constructed using quotes from various artists, writers, and thinkers that have been chosen because they refer to ideas of understanding and misunderstanding of the visual. The paintings are produced using a code which is not explained or expanded upon. They may contain deeper meanings or they may simply be arrangements of colour and shape".  Kate Mackay, May 2019
