ROOM CUBED - Factory 49, 49 Shepherd St, Marrickville - 6-17 October 2010

'Room Cubed' was my solo exhibition at Factory 49 in 2010.  It was a large cube construction that you could walk into.  The 'walls' and 'roof' were held up by a central pillar and the whole structure was tied off to points around the room.

Room Cubed - Press ReleaseIt looks like a room within a room, like architecture. It has walls and doorways and a roof. You can walk within and throughout it.

But it has no real structural integrity. It is only cardboard, paint and yarn. The colourful flimsy boxes are only tied together with brightly coloured scraps of wool. The cubes balance on top of each other and are tied off to the gallery walls to ensure that the entire structure does not collapse – it is only art after all.

‘ROOM CUBED’ is a continuation of Kate Mackay’s ‘CUBE’ constructions, where recycled cardboard boxes are painted and tied together in random colour combinations. The nature of the materials allows for the creation of large sculptural pieces from small, easily managed components.

2010 FISHER'S GHOST ART AWARD - Campbelltown Arts Centre, 1 Art Gallery Rd, Campbelltown - October-November 2010

I had a work accepted into the 2010 Fisher's Ghost Award - 'Small Round Cube'.  It was a prototype for a large round cube that I later constructed - stay tuned for that!...

It has a diameter of about 65cm and is constructed from small cardboard cubes, painted in acrylics and tied together with wool.  I originally made it for the Woollahra Small Sculpture prize - but they didn't like it...

INDEX. # 01 - Index, 60 Hutchinson Street St. Peters - October 2010

Index is/was a project space and studios in St.Peters run by Georgina Pollard and Alex Wisser.  Index.#01 was - 'The inaugural project showing at INDEX. an unthemed group showcase of the wealth of art and artists that make INDEX. possible.'  (from Index website).
CLICK HERE to see the photos of the show on the Index website.

My work was a tall cube - 3 cubes wide and 9 cubes tall - about the dimension of (a rather large and chunky) person. Each side consisted of cubes of a particular colour - a red side, blue side, yellow side, green side...  The materials are acrylic paint on cardboard with yarn, dimensions 166cm x 55cm x 55cm.

DECORATING LOOS - At The Vanishing Point, 565 King St Newtown - 3-20 June 2010

'Decorating Loos' was an exhibition curated by Georgie Pollard and the Marrickville Art Lab under the ATVP Emerging Curators Mentorship Program.  Fifteen toilet cubicles were built in the gallery with each artist creating their work within their own cubicle.

The title refered to both the architect Adolf Loos (most widely known for his essay 'Ornament and Crime') and to the everyday practice of drawing on toilet walls...

CLICK HERE for a great little article by Alex Wisser about the exhibition.

I lined the space with an assortment of crocheted stripes, completed with a small stool (no pun intended....really...) from which to contemplate the arrangement.

CARRIAGEARTWORKS - CarriageWorks, 245 Wilson St, Eveleigh - 25 March-24 April 2010

The second CarriageArtWorks exhibition involved Pam Aitken, Francesca Mataraga, Marlene Sarroff, Liz Shreeve and myself from Factory 49, as well as artists from Alpha House, Black & Blue Gallery, Hardware Gallery, Lennox St Studios, Marnling Press, May Street Studios, NG Art Gallery, Oh Really Gallery, Sheffer Gallery and Wilson St Gallery.

I created the 'Cube Wall' to span the space between two sets of steel columns within the Carriageworks space.  The cubes were tied to each other with wool and tied off to the side columns and top beam.
