PRECISE IMPERFECTION - Factory 49, 49 Shepherd st, Marrickville - 2007

'Imprecise Imperfection' was my second show at Factory 49.  I exhibited 3 large square paintings - 'Yellow Square', 'Red Square' and 'Blue Square' - each painting consisting of 4 panels; and small prototypes of 'Circle' paintings that I had planned. 

The title referred to the 'regular irregularity' that occurs when a small stencil is repeated over a large surface.  The grid loses its position and has to be constantly corrected, and oil paint bleeds and overlaps edges.

MAKING AND BREAKING PATTERN - Carnegie Gallery, 16 Argyle St, Hobart - 28 June-5 August 2007

'Making & Breaking Pattern' was curated by Judith Duquemin as an extension of the 'Fabrication' show that she had curated at The Tin Sheds in Sydney.  This exhibition involved Elizabeth Day, Judith Duquemin, Shaun Morrow, Giles Ryder, Justin Trendall and myself.

From the invitation - 'Through a breaking of the convention of pattern-making the conceptual realm of the artists' intention is revealed.  Pattern becomes a vehicle for expressing variation as opposed to the more mechanical functions of pattern-making: repetition, symmetry, balance and rhythm.'

SPACE BLUE SPACE - Outside Wall Work, Factory 49, 49 Shepherd St, Marrickville - 2007

As well as the regular inside showroom, Factory 49 also has an outside wall area under the stairwell in the car park that is on show 24 hours a day.  The work is in place for approximately 3 months, then the next artist installs a new piece.  The artist can use any part of the wall that is painted white - I chose to only use the large rectangle.  

My piece was called 'Space Blue Space' as it was based on a house paint colour called 'Space Blue'.  I divided the rectangle into a 4 x 4 grid - the first space (top right) used straight 'Space Blue', the next space mixed half blue, half white - this was continued until all the spaces were filled and each dilution was positioned as far as possible from the previous...

BUILDING BLOCKS - Factory 49, 49 Shepherd St, Marrickville - 22 June-1 July 2006

Factory 49 opened its (roller) door in June 2006 with Pam Aitken as its Director.  I had the first show with a series of works based around squares, blocks and the grid.

The exhibition included oil paintings on canvas, wall works constructed of painted MDF blocks, a cube of painted MDF blocks and a crocheted cube.

'Fabrication' included the work of Christopher Dean, Judith Duquemin, Justin Trendall, John Aslanidis and myself.  It was organised by Judith Duquemin and opened by Dr Jacqueline Millner.

I exhibited my first large 'Squares' painting, an extended version of the crocheted blocks that I had shown previously  at The Cross Art Projects, a large crocheted cube and another smaller crocheted work.

6 Kms from CBD - SNO Showroom, Factory 11, 11 Faversham Street, Marrickville - 21 July-6 August, 2005

'6 kms from CBD' was a group exhibition curated by Pam Aitken at the SNO Showroom at it's original location in Faversham Street, Marrickville.  I exhibited a multi-coloured crocheted square.  It was a really nice show! - the installation shots below were taken by Pam Aitken.
